Paving the Way to a Generalist Future: A Montessori-Style University Model

Abstract

This paper proposes a Montessori-style university model focusing on cultivating capable interdisciplinary thinkers who can better navigate the complex and unpredictable challenges of the world. Building upon research that highlights the decline in critical thinking skills amongst traditional students, this model emphasizes a generalist education framework rooted in Montessori principles such as hands-on learning, autonomy, and collaboration. By fostering enhanced executive function, critical thinking skills, and communication skills, this approach prepares students to thrive in fluctuating professional environments through creative, interdisciplinary teaching. Supported by evidence from author David Epstein and numerous experts, the proposed model aims to address the limitations of traditional education and equip future leaders with the skills necessary to adapt and innovate in an ever-changing global landscape.
